Description
The fox squirrel (sciurus niger), also called the eastern fox squirrel or Bryant's fox squirrel, can be found in the eastern United States from Florida up to Delaware, parts of lower New York, southern and western Pennsylvania west to the southern Canadian prairie provinces, the Dakotas, Colorado and south again to Texas. It is the largest squirrel native to North America.
Up to 30" in length and weighing up to three pounds, look for them in and around small stands of tall trees with little undergrowth, preferably oak, hickory, walnut or pine, around agricultural land. They tolerate humans well, so they can also be found in urban neighborhoods and parks with trees.
They feed mainly on nuts and seeds, but also eat tree buds, insects, tubers, roots, birds eggs, fungi, corn, soybeans, oats, wheat and fruit. They spend a lot more time on the ground than other squirrels.
