Description
This juvenile barred owl rests on a branch in Tampa, Florida's Lettuce Lake Park.
The Barred owls (strix varia) can be found in large mature forest and treed swamps across lower Canada and the upper United States from the Atlantic to Pacific Oceans. Also known as the hoot owl, they go as far south as northern California on the.west coast of the United States and appear in every state of the United States east of the Mississippi River.
The barred owls diet consist mainly of small animals, usually rodents, ampilbians, reptiles, insects, and fish. They are a generalist predator.
They trpically roost in trees in the day and hunt at night. They nest in tree cavities and can be found nearby during breeding season.
John James Audubon depicted the barred owl in plate 46.

I love the owl. I have yet to see one out where I can capture a photo. Every time I happen upon one, I have no camera :( You did a really gorgeous job capturing this young owl! Very nicely done Norman! (lf)

Remember to have your camera when you go to Lettuce Lake Park. It is the one place that I've gotten my most barred owl encounters. During the first of the year, there is usually a pair that nest near the start of the boardwalk by the canoe and kayak launch site. There is also a pair that usually nests at the same time on the part of the boardwalk that over looks the Hillsborough river in the narrows. Good luck.
