Artist's Description

On an April morning in 2016, a mute swan grooms itself on Lakeland, Florida's lake Morton. Swans are the city's mascot. Themute swan(cygnus olor) is native to much of Europe and Asia and a winter visitor to the far north of Africa. It is an introduced species in North America, Australasia and southern Africa. It is found naturally in the temperate areas of Eugope and across western Asia as far east as the Russinan Maritimes, near Sidemi. It is partiallhy migratory through the northern latitudes in Europe and Asia as far south as North Africa and the Mediterranean.

Cygnus olor is a large bird measuring from 55" to 63" in length with a wingspan betwee 79" and 94" that feeds mainly on vegetation on land and in the water. It also feeds occassionally on frogs, tadpoles, fish, snails, mollusks and insects.

About Norman Johnson

Norman Johnson

Like many of the old generation of photographers, I began with a Kodak box brownie when I was a kid. When I saw what resulted, I was hooked. Having grown up with an aunt who was a professional artist, I was always exposed to the creative arts. As a result, I have always liked to paint. Later I went to the Defense Information School at Ft. Benjamin Harrison in 1966 where I got more intensive training in photography and photojournalism and practiced that craft in Vietnam and the United States. I studied with the Famous Artist’s and Famous Photographer’s Schools to help hone my skills. I study the composition, use of light, contrasts of intensities of color, etc. of artist’s works that I catch my eyes to help me hone my skills. I...
